God of Destruction: Sleep, a Prophecy and Whis

Beerus is the God of Destruction of Universe 7. His job: keeping the universe in balance by destroying, the opposite of the Supreme Kais, who create and preserve. He doesn't take orders from them and destroys as he sees fit, without trying to consult them. Yet his life is tied to that of Shin, the Supreme Kai of Universe 7: if one dies, the other dies too.

He's accompanied by Whis, who is both his attendant and his martial arts teacher. Beerus admits it himself: the strongest opponent he has ever faced is still Whis, who is stronger than he is.

Beerus sleeps straight through for years, even decades, on a floating rock surrounded by giant hourglass-shaped alarm clocks, and destroys planets in his sector during the few years he's awake. In the year 739, the Oracle Fish predicts that, thirty-nine years later, he will face an opponent who will thrill him, the Super Saiyan God: Beerus then goes to bed.

Beerus has a twin brother, Champa, the God of Destruction of Universe 6, the twin of his own universe. In chapter 6 of the Dragon Ball Super manga, a flashback shows the twins fighting across the universe because Beerus ate the fruit off their birthday cake; stopped by Whis and Vados, they agree to stop settling things in battle and to compete in cooking contests instead. A gourmet, Beerus lives on a planet teeming with fish and other delicacies.

Battle of Gods: Pudding, a Slap and the Super Saiyan God

Beerus makes his screen debut in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, released in Japan on March 30, 2013, where he is the main antagonist. The film opens four years after Buu's defeat, when Beerus wakes up after thirty-nine years of sleep.

He tracks down Goku on King Kai's planet and, even though his opponent has gone Super Saiyan 3, floors him with a flick of his finger, then knocks him out with a single blow to the back of the neck. In the movie, the reason King Kai's planet is so small is that Beerus destroyed the old one after losing a game of hide-and-seek to King Kai. Vegeta, for his part, had already crossed paths with him as a child: during a feast, Beerus had used his father, King Vegeta, as a footrest.

Beerus and Whis then show up at Bulma's birthday party; Vegeta swallows his pride to keep the god happy, and the two visitors grow curious about Earthling food. Beerus's anger erupts when Majin Buu refuses to share his pudding. Furious that the party is ruined, Bulma slaps Beerus, who slaps her back, sending Vegeta into a rage.

To answer the god's challenge, Goku summons Shenron, who reveals the Super Saiyan God ritual: five pure-hearted Saiyans channel their energy into a sixth. After the fight, Beerus ranks Goku as the second-strongest opponent he has ever faced and tells him there are twelve universes; Whis, for his part, reveals that Beerus used a little less than 70% of his power.

To appear to keep his promise to destroy the Earth, Beerus fires an attack that only pulverizes a small rock, claiming he's completely out of strength. He apologizes to Bulma and demands his share of pudding at the next party. Back home, he tastes the wasabi he brought back from Earth, turns red and destroys the celestial bodies around his temple.

Dragon Ball Super: Champa, Zeno and the Tournament of Power

The Dragon Ball Super anime starts with a retelling of the movies Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F', before moving on to original arcs. When it aired, episode 5, the one with the duel between Beerus and Goku on King Kai's planet, was criticized for its poorly finished artwork. In chapter 1 of the manga, aliens throw a banquet for Beerus to save their planet and poison the meal, to no effect whatsoever; he destroys the planet anyway, just as he had announced.

In the movie Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F', released in 2015, Goku and Vegeta train with Whis on Beerus's planet, and their racket wakes the master of the house from his sleep. During the fight against Golden Frieza, Beerus enjoys a sundae from Bulma and refuses to step in: as a god, he doesn't meddle in other people's fights.

In both the manga and the anime, Champa proposes a tournament between teams from the two universes: if Beerus wins, he gets Champa's six Super Dragon Balls; if Champa wins, he swaps his Earth for Universe 7's. For his team, Beerus recruits Monaka, whom he presents as the strongest person he has ever fought, when he's actually a powerless delivery man. Universe 7 wins; in the anime, Beerus then uses the Super Dragon Balls to restore Universe 6's Earth for his brother.

Beerus fears Zeno, the king of all universes; in the anime, he even smashes his head through his own table to bow before him. Beerus uses Hakai, the signature ability of the Gods of Destruction, to erase Zamasu when the unmasked Zamasu tries to strike; in the manga, nothing is left but dust.

In the Tournament of Power, when all ten fighters from a universe are eliminated, that universe is erased along with its deities, Angels excepted: Beerus is putting his own existence on the line. In the anime, when Champa is erased along with Universe 6, Beerus remains impassive, then quietly wishes his brother would “say something.”

Vegeta's Teacher, Babysitter and a 2026 Comeback

In the Dragon Ball Super manga, during the Granolah arc, Beerus trains Vegeta in Hakai for several weeks and gives him an earring, a symbol of his mastery of the technique. In the same arc, he admits to the prince that he was the one who told Frieza to destroy Planet Vegeta, which enrages his student.

In the movie Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Beerus stays behind and looks after Bulla, Bulma's daughter, entertaining her with his tail. In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, he finds Broly, Cheelai and Lemo settled on his planet and lets them stay after tasting Lemo's cooking.

Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, a remastered and re-edited version of the anime's Beerus, Golden Frieza and Universe 6 arcs, is scheduled for release in Japan on October 11, 2026. It was Kōichi Yamadera, Beerus's Japanese voice, who unveiled the remake of the Beerus arc in January 2026, at the Dragon Ball Genkidamatsuri event; trailers released in April, then in September, revealed that the Golden Frieza and Universe 6 arcs would be included as well.

A Cat, a Beer and a Virus: The Birth of Beerus

Screenwriter Yūsuke Watanabe first imagined Beerus as a villain who infects people with evil. Hence his Japanese name, Birusu, a play on the word “virus” as it's pronounced in German. Akira Toriyama, for his part, thought the name came from “beer,” and named Whis after whisky, kicking off the run of alcohol-inspired names continued with Vados and Champa.

Toei first drew the character as a lizard; Toriyama completely transformed him into a cat. His model: Debo, the fourteen-year-old Cornish Rex cat who lived with the mangaka. Toriyama explained that the design started from a cat and that his outfit was inspired by Egyptian clothing. Beerus is a purple anthropomorphic cat with golden-yellow eyes, big pointed ears and a hairless body.

Beerus was supposed to fight the heroes with a spoon or a fork; finding that fight too awkward, Battle of Gods' animation director, Tadayoshi Yamamuro, suggested chopsticks. The romanization “Bills,” widespread among fans, isn't official: the movie's booklet sold in Japan spelled it “Beers.”

In Japanese, Beerus is voiced by Kōichi Yamadera in the Dragon Ball productions. In English, he first speaks in Funimation's dub of Battle of Gods, released in U.S. and Canadian theaters in the summer of 2014, with Jason Douglas as his voice; Douglas keeps the role in Resurrection 'F', the Dragon Ball Super series, Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. In Bang Zoom!'s alternate regional dub of Dragon Ball Super for Toonami Asia (Southeast Asia and India), he's voiced by John DeMita.
