Hit is the legendary hitman of Universe 6, recruited by Champa to take on Universe 7 in Dragon Ball Super. A master of the Time-Skip, which lets him skip a fraction of a second, he knocks out Vegeta, pushes Goku to his limits, gets hired in the anime to assassinate him, then falls to Jiren in the Tournament of Power. Hit, the legendary hitman of Universe 6

Hit is a Universe 6 character created for Dragon Ball Super: his universe's legendary assassin. In chapter 12 of the manga, Champa and Vados introduce him as a legend of the criminal underworld; in episode 38 of the anime, Whis describes him as the best assassin in Universe 6, said never to have missed a target.

He's a tall, muscular humanoid with purple skin, a bald head, flattened ears and red eyes, whose face is reminiscent of Cell's. Over his outfit, he wears a long turtleneck trench coat in dark purple, blue and gray. In the manga, the bottom of the coat covers his legs so his opponent can't read his movements, and in chapter 13 Goku realizes that Hit keeps his hands in his pockets to hold it down.

Hit is stoic and composed, to the point of seeming emotionless: in chapter 12, Fuwa, the Supreme Kai of Universe 6, is surprised to hear him talk so much with Goku, since Hit is reputed to be mute. Yet he does have a code of honor: in episode 71, he asks Goku to turn around, since his method is to strike with a single blow, from the front.

The Time-Skip, Hit's signature technique

His signature technique, Toki Tobashi, is known in English as the Time-Skip. It lets him “skip” a tenth of a second, during which he moves freely to parry and counterattack; in chapter 12, the Galactic King explains that Hit suspends time for everyone except himself. Hit goes first and foremost for vital points, which lets him take down even opponents stronger than he is without much effort.

In episode 38 of the anime, Bulma wants Jaco to arrest Hit, since manipulating time is a galactic crime, but the patrolman refuses: he has no desire to die. In episode 72, Vados explains that Hit doesn't stop time: he skips it, stores it and uses it to create a parallel world that he can enter and leave at will.

The two versions diverge: in the anime (episode 39), Hit improves mid-fight, his Time-Skip going from 0.1 to 0.2 seconds, then to half a second; in the manga, against Goku, he unleashes his full power, but his skip never goes beyond a tenth of a second. In the anime, he also states that he can't transform: to get stronger, he has to refine his technique.

Against Vegeta and Goku: the Universe 6 vs. Universe 7 tournament

In the manga, Champa ordered Vados to recruit Hit at any cost; in both versions, if Universe 6 wins, Hit is to receive Champa's Cube in return, a ship that can go anywhere. He teams up with Cabba, Frost, Botamo and Magetta. Only the anime shows him stopping Frost from stealing the Cube.

In episode 38, which aired in Japan on April 10, 2016, Hit knocks out Vegeta, even though he has gone Super Saiyan Blue; in the manga, Vegeta, also in Super Saiyan Blue, goes down the same way, but already badly weakened. At the start of his match against Goku, Hit reveals that he's over 1,000 years old.

In both versions, Goku finds a counter by anticipating where Hit will be a tenth of a second later. In the anime, he then combines Super Saiyan Blue with the Kaio-ken (episode 39). He later asks for the ban on killing to be lifted so that Hit can fight at full power, then, tired of the argument this sparks between Beerus and Champa, suggests they fight another day with no rules and deliberately steps out of the ring (episode 40). In the manga (chapter 13), he explains that Hit is holding back so as not to kill, which the rules forbid, offers to fight him someday with no rules, and jumps out of the ring of his own accord.

Facing Monaka, Universe 7's last fighter, Hit realizes he's dealing with an amateur and throws himself out of the ring: Universe 7 wins. In the anime, Hit then announces that he no longer wants the Cube.

The contract on Goku, two anime-only episodes

The contract on Goku spans episodes 71 and 72 of the anime, which no manga chapter adapts; the first aired in Japan on December 18, 2016. In it, Hit first fulfills a contract in Universe 6, then checks his mission device, a small chip he keeps in his pocket that displays his next target: Goku.

Before striking, he offers Goku the chance to disappear: he would spare him and say he had killed him. Goku refuses, and Hit stops his heart with an invisible blow. In episode 72, Goku comes to when the energy ball he had fired before collapsing falls back down on him; the fight resumes, and a Kamehameha shatters Hit's parallel space.

The client was Goku himself: he had begged Whis, who contacted Vados, who hired Hit. Learning that the contract has no deadline, Hit leaves with a smile: he'll take his time, and Goku had better watch his back.

In the Tournament of Power, then behind the scenes

In chapter 33 of the manga, as the fighters arrive in the Tournament of Power arena, Hit lets Goku know he hasn't been sitting idle since their fight in the tournament between Universes 6 and 7. In the anime (episode 104), the Pride Trooper Dyspo counters Hit's Time-Skip by listening for the tension in his muscles just before he activates it; Hit regains the upper hand by faking that tension to fool Dyspo's hearing.

In episode 111 of the anime, which aired in Japan on October 15, 2017, Hit takes on Jiren alone, traps him for a moment in a technique that paralyzes him and goes all in, since his “job” is to make Universe 6 win; Jiren breaks free and eliminates him. In the manga (chapter 35), Hit saves Goku with a surprise kick, slows Jiren down with a new technique, Time Lag, and pushes him toward the edge, but Jiren was holding back and sends him flying out with a punch.

Erased along with Universe 6, Hit comes back to life when Android 17 uses the Super Dragon Balls to restore the universes. His name evokes the English word hit, a blow, and hitman, a contract killer. In Japanese, he's voiced by Kazuhiro Yamaji; in English, by Matthew Mercer, whom Funimation cast for its Dragon Ball Super dub. Before the anime's English dub, Hit had already spoken English in the game Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, voiced by Aaron Roberts.
