Majin Buu is the last of the three main antagonists of Dragon Ball Z. Locked away for millions of years inside a sealing ball, he is awakened by the wizard Babidi and first appears as a pink, round, childlike creature, capable of turning his victims into treats. His friendship with Mr. Satan and a puppy named Bee softens him, but his anger when gunmen wound them drives him to split in two; later, his original form resurfaces, and Goku wipes him out with a Spirit Bomb. An ancient creature with disputed origins

In the manga and the Dragon Ball Z anime, Buu is presented as the creation of the wizard Bibidi, who wanted to rule the universe. Yet Akira Toriyama later stated that Buu had existed since time immemorial. And Dragon Ball Daima offers a third version: it was the witch Marba who created him, at Bibidi's request.

Millions of years before the story begins, Buu kills two of the five Supreme Kais, then absorbs the South Supreme Kai and the Grand Supreme Kai, ruler of all the Kais: it's this last absorption that gives rise to Fat Buu. The manga recounts these events; only the anime shows the fight.

Bibidi then locks Buu away in a sealing ball, a big cocoon that he brings to Earth. But Shin, the last surviving Supreme Kai, kills the wizard before the seal can be lifted. According to Toriyama, the “M” on the clothes of Bibidi, Babidi and Buu stands for “Ma,” Japanese for demon.

The awakening: Babidi, Dabura and Fat Buu

Buu appears in chapter 460 of the manga, published on March 1, 1994. Millions of years after Bibidi's death, the wizard Babidi sends Yamu and Spopovich to steal energy from the fighters at the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament in order to revive the monster. Buu finally emerges from his ball thanks to the energy released by the fight between Goku and Majin Vegeta.

To the surprise of Babidi and Dabura, what hatches isn't a terrifying demon but an obese, childlike creature. Yet Buu turns Dabura, the Demon King, into a cookie, then swallows him whole.

Vegeta sacrifices himself in an explosion to kill him, in vain: Buu's rubbery body regenerates, even when blown to shreds. During his fight with Goku, Buu learns the Kamehameha after seeing it just once. His transformation beam can turn any object or person into something else.

Buu eventually turns on Babidi: he strangles him to keep him from saying the sealing incantation, then kills him with a single punch.

Mr. Satan, Bee and the birth of Good Buu

Now free, Buu meets a blind boy who isn't afraid of him; surprised, he restores the boy's sight so that he can see him… and be afraid. Buu lives in a house built from humans turned into modeling clay, and his appetite for sweets seems endless.

Mr. Satan comes to his house and tries to kill him several times, with poison, explosives or blows, so clumsily that Buu doesn't even realize these are assassination attempts. Buu then heals an injured puppy, a Labrador, hoping it will run away; the puppy, named Bee, stays by his side and becomes his friend, then Mr. Satan's too.

Witnessing this act of kindness, Mr. Satan gives up on his assassination attempts and questions the monster: Buu explains that he kills simply because Bibidi and Babidi ordered him to destroy. When Mr. Satan tells him that killing is wrong, Buu, genuinely shocked, promises to never harm anyone again.

Two gunmen wound Bee, whom Buu heals, then one of them shoots Mr. Satan. Buu heals him in turn, but the pain of nearly losing his friend leaves him struggling with his anger. Overwhelmed, he splits in two: a good Buu and an evil Buu, tall, thin and gray.

Super Buu, Kid Buu and the Spirit Bomb

Evil Buu deflects Good Buu's beam back at him, turns him into chocolate and eats him: the two merge into Super Buu. Good Buu's influence still keeps him from killing Mr. Satan and Bee. Super Buu wipes out almost the entire population of Earth, then absorbs Gotenks and Piccolo, which makes him far more powerful and more intelligent.

Deprived of the Fat Buu he had absorbed, Super Buu reverts to his original form, Kid Buu, who immediately blows up the Earth. Held back by Vegeta and by the freed Fat Buu, he is wiped out by Goku with a giant Spirit Bomb, fueled by the energy of the revived Earthlings.

At Goku's request, King Yemma reincarnates Kid Buu as an Earthling: Uub, whose name is “Buu” spelled backward.

Mr. Buu, from Super to Daima

After the battle, Mr. Satan takes Buu and Bee home to live with him and his daughter Videl. Fat Buu, now completely good, lives on Earth under the name Mr. Buu. Ten years later, he signs up for the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament; throughout those ten years, he has been losing to Mr. Satan on purpose.

In the movie Battle of Gods and the Dragon Ball Super series, Buu refuses to share his pudding with Beerus, which makes the God of Destruction angry. At the tournament against Universe 6, he's eliminated in the written exam: in the Dragon Ball Super manga, he misspells his own name; in the anime, he falls asleep during the test.

Buu doesn't take part in the Tournament of Power: in the anime series, he falls into a deep sleep just before it, and Goku recruits Frieza to replace him. In the Dragon Ball Super manga, during the Moro arc, the Grand Supreme Kai's memories awaken within Buu, who overpowers Moro for a while, until Moro regains his full strength. In the movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, the pink demon appears asleep.

In Dragon Ball GT, an anime-only sequel, Mr. Buu permanently fuses with Uub. And in Dragon Ball Daima, Shin and Kibito explain that Good Buu absorbed them: the atmosphere inside his body canceled the Potara fusion of Kibito Kai and separated the two characters.

Creation, name and English voices

The names of Buu, Bibidi and Babidi come from the song “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo” from Walt Disney's movie Cinderella. Toriyama explained that Buu's design was inspired by the adaptations of One Thousand and One Nights he watched as a kid. In the series, all of his forms are simply called “Majin Buu”: names like “Kid Buu” or “Super Buu” come from guidebooks, video games or fans.

In Japanese, Buu was voiced in all his forms by Kōzō Shioya; in Dragon Ball Daima, his miniature version has a different voice, that of Shiho Amuro; after Shioya's death on January 20, 2026, Mitsuaki Kanuka took over the role of Buu in the game Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO.

In English, Funimation's dub splits Buu between two actors: Josh Martin voices Fat Buu and Kid Buu in Dragon Ball Z, then Buu in the movie Battle of Gods, while Justin Cook voices Evil Buu and Super Buu. In Dragon Ball Daima, the mini version of Majin Buu is voiced by Dusty Feeney. The Canadian dub recorded by Westwood Media for AB Groupe splits the role too: Scott McNeil plays Fat Buu, and Brian Dobson plays Evil Buu, Super Buu and Kid Buu.
