Vegito: Goku and Vegeta's Potara Fusion

Vegito is the warrior born from the fusion of Goku and Vegeta through the Potara, the Supreme Kais' earrings. Introduced in the manga's Buu Saga, he dominates Super Buu, who turns him into a piece of candy; he then lets himself be absorbed on purpose, before splitting apart inside the monster's body. He returns in Dragon Ball Super to face Fused Zamasu. Here's a look back at the rules of the Potara, his battles, his look and his dual voice, without mixing him up with Gogeta.

The Potara, the Supreme Kais' earrings

The Potara earrings are worn by the Supreme Kais and their apprentices; they're what allow Goku and Vegeta to fuse into Vegito. His Japanese name, Bejitto, is a portmanteau built from the katakana names of Vegeta and Kakarot, Goku's Saiyan name. In Japan, it's most often romanized as “Vegetto”; “Vegito” is the spelling used in Funimation's English dub, and Viz's English edition of the manga calls him “Vegerot.”

To fuse, one of the two fighters wears a Potara earring on the left ear and the other on the right ear; the fused warrior then wears the pair, one earring on each ear. The Potara fusion also combines the two fighters' clothes, whereas with the Fusion Dance, the warrior wears the outfit of the people who invented that dance.

In chapter 501 of the manga, the Supreme Kai and his assistant Kibito fuse using the Potara, and the Elder Kai only reveals after the fact that this fusion is permanent. In the next chapter, he tells Goku that he himself is the product of a Potara fusion. Unlike the Fusion Dance, the Potara don't require the two fighters to have the same power level.

Dragon Ball Super later sets another rule: the Potara fusion wears off after one hour when neither fighter is a Supreme Kai; it's only permanent if one of the two is. The Potara were reportedly just a decoration at first: Akira Toriyama is said to have turned them into a fusion device to unite Goku and Vegeta without encroaching on the movie Toei was preparing at the time, Fusion Reborn, which features Gogeta.

Goku, Vegeta and Super Buu: the birth of Vegito

During the Buu Saga, the Elder Kai, who now wears the halo of the dead himself, entrusts his Potara to Goku so he can fuse with Gohan and finish off Buu. But Buu absorbs Gohan using a piece of his appendage that Goku had sliced off and that was left lying on the ground: Goku finds himself without a partner. For lack of a better option, he considers fusing with Mr. Satan; the anime adds an imagined fusion with Dende.

Goku then senses the energy of Vegeta, who is dead but has been brought back to Earth by Fortuneteller Baba; Vegeta is reluctant at first. In the manga, he gives in as Super Buu approaches, and Goku waits until he's in the middle of putting the earring on to tell him the fusion will be permanent. In the anime, Vegeta is still refusing when Super Buu catches up with them: the two Saiyans first fight him together, and Vegeta only puts the earring on after being overpowered.

Vegito first appears at the end of chapter 503 of the manga, first published in Weekly Shōnen Jump and then collected in volume 42, the final volume of Dragon Ball, released in Japan on August 4, 1995; he gives himself his name in chapter 504. In the anime, he appears at the very end of episode 268 of Dragon Ball Z, which aired in Japan on June 28, 1995.

Super Vegito, the candy and the deliberate absorption

The manga shows him as a Super Saiyan from the very start of the fight: Vegito immediately proclaims himself “Super Vegito.” The anime first has him fight in his base form: in episode 269, which aired in Japan on July 5, 1995, he kicks Super Buu's giant bomb back into space before transforming. Among his techniques is an energy sword, a blade of ki he uses both as a Super Saiyan and as a Super Saiyan Blue.

In the manga, an overpowered Super Buu asks Vegito if he likes coffee candy, then zaps him with a beam that turns him into a ball of candy. Even as a candy, Vegito keeps all his strength, proclaims himself “the strongest candy in the universe” and takes advantage of being tiny, and therefore harder to hit. The manga wraps up this scene in two pages, after which Buu turns him back to normal; the anime stretches it out with gags, including the monster trying to devour him.

In the manga, it's on purpose that Vegito, still in candy form, sliced off a piece of appendage while bursting through Buu's head: he's waiting for Buu to use it to absorb him. When the piece engulfs him, Vegito surrounds himself with an energy barrier so that he isn't really absorbed.

Inside Buu, Vegito drops his barrier to go looking for Gohan and the others, and immediately splits back into Goku and Vegeta. Goku doesn't understand, since the fusion was supposed to be permanent; he assumes it was the unhealthy atmosphere inside Buu's body that undid it. Vegeta then crushes his Potara, followed by Goku with his, sending the Supreme Kais watching the scene into a panic.

Back in Super: Vegito vs. Zamasu

Vegito returns in episode 66 of the Dragon Ball Super anime, which aired in Japan on November 13, 2016, to face Fused Zamasu. Just before, Goku asks Gowasu, the Supreme Kai of Universe 10, why he and Vegeta had split apart the first time; Gowasu answers that the fusion only lasts one hour for those who aren't Supreme Kais.

In the anime, Vegito goes Super Saiyan Blue as soon as the fusion is complete. After running Fused Zamasu through with his energy sword, he points out that Zamasu is no longer immortal, since he has merged forever with a mortal body: Goku's, stolen by Goku Black, the other half of the fusion. But just as he's about to strike, he splits back into Goku and Vegeta before the hour is up: according to Gowasu, they burned through the energy that was keeping the fusion going.

In the Dragon Ball Super manga, Vegito makes his entrance by blasting away part of Fused Zamasu's body, then warns him that Zamasu's fusion, like his own, will only last one hour. He swallows the last Senzu Bean, goes Super Saiyan Blue and clearly dominates his opponent, whereas in the anime the fight is roughly even. Earlier in that chapter, when Gowasu reveals the one-hour limit, Shin, the Supreme Kai from the Buu Saga, who believed Vegito's separation came from the monster's insides, realizes it was the time limit.

Dragon Ball Daima gives a different explanation: in its first episode, which aired in Japan on October 11, 2024, Shin and Kibito, who are no longer a single being, explain that when Vegito separated, they realized Buu's insides produce a gas that cancels out the power of the Potara, and that they got themselves absorbed and then spat back out by the good Buu so they could separate in turn.

Outfit, personality and dual voice

In the anime, Vegito wears both yellow Potara earrings and a color-swapped version of Goku's Turtle School outfit: the pants and top, orange on Goku, turn blue, and the T-shirt worn underneath turns orange. He also wears Vegeta's gloves and boots. His black hair sweeps up and back like Vegeta's, with two strands falling over his forehead like Goku's.

He gets his confidence and his love of taunting from Vegeta, and he toys with his opponents, but he inherited Goku's jovial, easygoing nature.

In Japanese, Vegito speaks with the layered voices of Masako Nozawa and Ryō Horikawa, the actors behind Goku and Vegeta. Funimation's English dub does the same, layering the voices of Goku's and Vegeta's actors, Sean Schemmel and Christopher Sabat, in Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters and Dragon Ball Super. The Ocean dub of Dragon Ball Z, aired in Canada and the UK, used a single actor instead, Brian Drummond, whose voice mixed the two.
