Videl: The Crime Fighter Who Married Gohan

Mr. Satan's daughter, Satan City's crime fighter

Created by Akira Toriyama, Videl first appears in chapter 421 of the manga, published in Weekly Shōnen Jump on May 11, 1993; in the anime, she debuts in episode 200 of Dragon Ball Z, which aired in Japan on September 8, 1993. The daughter of world champion Mr. Satan, she'll go on to become the wife of Gohan and the mother of Pan.

In her early days, she's a strong-willed crime fighter, a bit of a tomboy, who lends the Satan City police a hand. In chapter 421, she shows up behind Gohan, who has turned Super Saiyan so no one will recognize him, just after he has taken down a gang of robbers; that same day, at Orange Star High School, Gohan discovers that she's Mr. Satan's daughter.

In chapter 424, her watch goes off in the middle of class: two armed robbers are fleeing along Route 81. Videl sets her plane down across the road and waits for them, handcuffs in hand. At this point, she's wearing a long white T-shirt, tight black shorts, black fingerless gloves and sneakers.

According to the timeline in an official guide, Videl won the junior division of an earlier World Martial Arts Tournament. Later on, she'll hide her visits to Gohan's house, where she learns to fly, from her father: Mr. Satan won't let her go out with anyone weaker than him. Gohan, for his part, knows she's already much stronger than the champion.

The Great Saiyaman unmasked and the flying lessons

As early as chapter 422, Videl suspects Gohan of being the golden-haired fighter from the robbery: she remembers that, in the footage of the Cell Games, some of the fighters' hair turned golden. In chapter 425, she sees the Great Saiyaman fly off and realizes that flying isn't a trick.

In the manga, she unmasks him with a ruse: she calls out to the Great Saiyaman by his first name, and he answers without thinking. She then blackmails him: if he doesn't sign up for the tournament, she'll reveal his identity, and she demands that he teach her how to fly. The anime handles the discovery with an original episode, in which Videl fights the Great Saiyaman, believing he stole a baby pterodactyl.

In chapter 428, Gohan explains to her that flying is just a matter of controlling your ki; that very day, she starts to levitate. Before she leaves, he advises her to cut her hair: she blushes, thinking he prefers girls with short hair, but he clarifies that it's more practical for fighting. Miffed, she still comes back the next day with her hair cut short.

After more than ten days of training, Videl can fly freely. In the anime, the first lessons and the haircut take up episode 207 of Dragon Ball Z, which aired in Japan on November 17, 1993; it's also in this episode that she manages to form a small sphere of energy.

From the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament to the Buu Saga

At the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, Videl faces Spopovich in the first round (chapter 440): she knocks him around with ease, but he gets back up after every blow. In chapter 441, a kick from Videl twists Spopovich's head backward, and he pushes it back into place with his hands. When Spopovich threatens to crush Videl's head under his foot, Gohan can't hold back anymore and goes Super Saiyan (chapter 442).

In the manga, Spopovich knocks out some of her teeth with a knee strike; in the infirmary, Gohan feeds her a Senzu Bean, which even restores her teeth. She then wears a T-shirt reading “FIGHT” for most of the Buu Saga.

In chapter 446, as they fly toward Babidi's spaceship, Gohan confirms to her that he was the kid from the Cell Games: Videl realizes that it was him, and not her father, who defeated Cell. Too slow to keep up with him, she calls out that when he gets back, she'll ask him out on a date.

When Gohan is believed dead after facing Buu, Videl keeps insisting he's alive, and Goku thinks that's likely (chapter 477). In chapter 493, Buu turns those who had taken refuge at Dende's Lookout into chocolate and eats them: Videl dies with them, before being brought back to life by the Dragon Balls of Namek.

Gohan's wife, Pan's mother and Great Saiyaman 2

At the end of the manga, ten years later, Videl is married to Gohan and they have a daughter, Pan. In the anime, at Gohan's house, you can see the couple's wedding photo and, next to it, one of Pan at age 4; Videl's hair has grown back into a short bob.

After Buu's defeat, in the anime and on the big screen, Videl becomes a costumed crime fighter in turn: in Japanese, she's Great Saiyaman No. 2, and “Great Saiyawoman” in the American dub. This costume doesn't exist in the manga: you see it in the movie Wrath of the Dragon, at the end of the Dragon Ball Z anime and in Dragon Ball GT.

Out of costume, she also plays a part in other movies: in Broly – Second Coming, she distracts Broly for a moment by throwing a crystal at him while he's choking Gohan; in Fusion Reborn, she backs Gohan up against a horde of villains back from Other World. In the Dragon Ball Super manga (chapter 4), a sixth Saiyan is missing for the Super Saiyan God ritual: Videl reveals that she's pregnant with Pan. In the Dragon Ball Super anime, her hair even turns golden during the ritual.

In the movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, tied up with her martial arts school, she asks Piccolo to pick Pan up from preschool. In Dragon Ball GT, possessed by Baby, Gohan and Videl turn on Pan, who is saved by Uub; later, she puts her Great Saiyaman 2 costume back on to face Super 17, but arrives when everything has already been settled.

A devilish name, voices and fans

Her name is an anagram of the English word “devil”, echoing the name of her father, Mr. Satan. Her mother is never named in the series; Toriyama suggested that she was a singer named Miguel.

In Japan, Videl is voiced by Yūko Minaguchi, who was replaced by Shino Kakinuma in the final arc of Dragon Ball Kai. In English, Kara Edwards voices her in Funimation's dub of Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters and Dragon Ball Super, with Susan Huber taking over in Dragon Ball GT; in the Ocean dub of Dragon Ball Z, it's Moneca Stori.

In a 2004 poll of the Japanese public, Videl ranked as Dragon Ball's 20th most popular character; she also became playable in the game Dragon Ball FighterZ in 2019.
