Whis, Beerus's Angel and Master

Whis is the guide Angel attached to Beerus, Universe 7's God of Destruction, and he's also Beerus's martial arts teacher. The Angels' role is to guide and train the Gods of Destruction so they can master their powers, while also serving them as personal attendants: Whis rarely leaves Beerus alone.

He's a tall, slender humanoid with pale blue skin, white hair and purple eyes. A large light blue ring floats around his neck, and he wears a burgundy robe under a black cuirass.

Whis makes his screen debut in the movie Battle of Gods, released in Japan on March 30, 2013. At the start of the movie, he wakes Beerus up by threatening to sing him a wake-up song; at the end, Beerus reveals to the heroes that Whis is his master and that he's stronger than he is. Back home, when Beerus, crazed with pain after tasting wasabi, starts destroying the nearby celestial bodies, Whis stops him with a simple chop.

According to Akira Toriyama, on a power scale, Super Saiyan God Goku would rate a 6, Beerus a 10 and Whis a 15. In the anime, Goku and later Future Trunks initially mistake him for the God of Destruction, because he looks more “godlike” than Beerus. In the movie Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Whis holds his own against a rampaging Broly while merely playing with him.

A Foodie Easily Won Over by a Good Meal

Like Beerus, Whis is obsessed with food: he gets excited about every new cuisine, even though Angels supposedly have no need to eat. In Battle of Gods, while Beerus takes on the heroes, Whis settles into a restaurant near Capsule Corporation and develops a taste for sushi.

In episode 16 of the Dragon Ball Super anime, we learn that Bulma takes him to all sorts of restaurants to butter him up. Vegeta, who can't cook, has him try instant noodles: won over, the Angel agrees to take him to train on Beerus's planet.

In Resurrection 'F', Bulma tries to reach Whis by promising him a strawberry sundae; once on Earth, Whis and Beerus argue over which of them ate more strawberries. In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, a tub of ice cream, knocked onto Whis's scepter during a training session, even keeps him from seeing Bulma's call.

Goku and Vegeta's Trainer

In episode 18 of the anime, Goku joins Vegeta on Beerus's planet and discovers that the first sessions Whis assigns are household chores; the Angel also gives him a training outfit. In Resurrection 'F', Whis uses his speed to sign his two students' clothes with a permanent marker: that signature, which serves as his symbol, adorns Goku's gi from then on.

In that movie, as in that same episode 18, Whis explains to them that their goal should be to move each part of the body independently of the others: the principle of Ultra Instinct, whose name only comes later. In chapter 5 of the manga, he's the one who suggests the name “Super Saiyan Blue” to replace the overly long “Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan.”

In the manga, in chapter 39, when Goku dodges Jiren in a new state, Whis confirms to Beerus that it's Ultra Instinct, before noting that Goku only tapped into it for a moment. In the anime (episode 110), Whis exclaims that his student is “reacting without thinking,” and it's Beerus who names the state. Later, in chapter 68, Whis fights Goku, who can now enter perfected Ultra Instinct at will, and explains to him that it's just a starting point; Beerus adds that Angels are permanently in that state.

The Scepter and the Three-Minute Rewind

The Angels' scepter, which Whis usually holds in his right hand, projects images of both the past and the present, serves as a weapon in combat and goes with him on his trips from one planet to another; in the anime, it also contains a dimension where Whis can send people or objects.

Whis can turn back time by up to three minutes. In Resurrection 'F', after Frieza blows up the Earth, Whis brings everyone back to just before the explosion, a scene the anime revisits in episode 27; at the end of the movie, he claims he only did it so he could keep enjoying Earth's delicacies. In episode 59 of the anime, he also turns back time to stop Zamasu from killing Gowasu, which the manga tells differently.

In the anime (episode 83), to get Vegeta to agree to take part in the Tournament of Power, Whis brings Bulla into the world ahead of her due date with his scepter; in the manga, he triggers the birth with a mere glance. After the tournament, in both the anime and the manga, he's the one who brings Frieza back to life, as a gift from Beerus.

In the manga-only Moro arc, Whis stops one of Moro's punches with a single finger, while explaining to Goku that, to save the Earth, he has to destroy the crystal on Moro's forehead.

A Family of Angels, a Whisky Name and a Voice

Whis is the son of the Grand Priest, the father of all the other known Angels: the anime reveals this in episode 67, when Whis invites his father to visit Universe 7. Vados, Champa's Angel, is his older sister; in chapter 5 of the manga, she claims to be a little stronger than him, which Whis disputes. The manga also gives him an older brother, Korn, and a younger brother, Merus.

His name comes from the word “whisky”, and it was born of a misunderstanding: Toriyama thought Beerus's name came from “beer” and followed the same logic. Vados, for her part, is named after calvados.

In Japanese, Whis is voiced by Masakazu Morita; in English, Ian Sinclair voices him in Funimation's dub of the Dragon Ball Super series as well as in the movies Battle of Gods, Resurrection 'F', Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. In the anime, he appears from the very first episode of Dragon Ball Super, which aired in Japan on July 5, 2015.
